The city of Nelson, B.C., plans to redesign its current wayfinding signage, to make visitors and new residents feel more welcome, as well as better navigate the streets and sidewalks.
According to a report from the Nelson Star, consultant Susan Mover of Public: Architecture + Communication presented the company’s draft plan at a recent city council meeting. The plan includes various types of signs within a collective “sign family,” and details how they are co-ordinated based on colour, theme, and typography.
The city received funding for the project last year, the report states, through the province’s Tourism Dependent Communities Fund. Additionally, the $700,000 grant will pay for the installation of three new welcome signs at the city’s entrance this summer.
In an effort to design signage which would “roll out the welcome mat for visitors,” Mover told council the firm sought feedback from the community, as well as direction from a focus group which included city staff, as well as representatives from the heritage, tourism, business, and social sectors. Ultimately, she added, the public and the focus group wanted “something contemporary, but with a timeless feel, with strong legibility.”
The report states the draft plan was brought to council for information only and will be presented for approval at a later meeting.
