Heico Lighting, a division of EMD Technologies in Saint-Eustache, Que., has voluntarily recalled its Platinum neon power-supply transformers because they do not meet Underwriters Laboratories (UL) standards and pose a fire risk.

The Canadian manufacturer announced the recall on January 8 in co-operation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Approximately 3,900 of the transformers, which are designed to power commercial signs, were sold to distributors between December 2011 and May 2012. No incidents or injuries have been reported.

Configured in 114 x 89-mm (4.5 x 3.5-in.) black metal boxes, with rows of vents on all sides, the recalled models include Platinum 9000-30 (pictured, left), Platinum 10000-30 (right), TFT-04PL-6000-30 and TFT-06PL-9000-30. Heico is scheduling free professional installations of replacement transformers.
