Beyond Digital Imaging (BDI) of Markham, Ont., recently replaced two enormous mesh banners depicting a rain forest in the Grand Hall of the Canadian Museum of Civilization (CMC) in Gatineau, Que.

The two banners are approximately 82.3 x 8.5 m (270 x 28 ft), stretching along the hall and positioned one behind the other, spaced about 102 mm (4 in.) apart from front to back. This two-layer configuration creates an effect of greater depth when viewed from the front. Each banner starts some 6 m (20 ft) above the floor, rising to a height of 14.6 m (48 ft).

The existing scrims were produced more than 20 years ago, when the museum was built. BDI recreated the rain forest scene from archival slides and printed it on panels of Ultraflexx’s fire-rated speaker mesh material.

With a custom aluminum framing system, BDI installed the graphics in January when the museum was closed for a week. It was a challenging task, as the installers had to navigate around the hall’s priceless totem poles.
