Brantford, Ont., council has greenlit a $25,000 expenditure for new entry signage at the city’s Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre.
According to a report from the Brant Beacon[2], the majority of councillors voted in favour of supporting the project at their regular council meeting on June 27.
The idea for the entryway sign was presented during a committee of the whole meeting earlier that month, by councillors Dan McCreary and Greg Martin. It was inspired by discussions with the public back in April, regarding traffic control surrounding the centre.
“The entrance sign for Gretzky is set back quite a way from the road, and a lot of people don’t see it,” Martin said in the report. “What we’re considering is the possibility of a big overhead sign over the road pointing into the Gretzky Centre.”
Council had also entertained other options, such as the addition of a signalized intersection. However, due to the cost and the fact the city study for the initiative was done outside of hockey season, it was determined that type of project was not currently warranted.
Staff aims to have the sign completed and installed this October, in time for the 10th anniversary of the centre’s rebuild.
