New Quebec rules add more French to signs

homesenseOn Nov. 24, new amendments came into effect for signage regulations under Quebec’s Charter of the French Language, requiring businesses operating in the province to add French words to their non-French outdoor signs.

The amendments come in the wake of a long-running legal dispute between the provincial government and multinational retailers like Best Buy, Costco and Walmart. Adding a descriptive word like ‘magasin’ or ‘auberge’ to the English name of a store or hotel, for example, will be acceptable under the new rules.

The regulations apply immediately to all new signs. Businesses have three years—i.e. until Nov. 24, 2019—to ensure their existing signs also comply.
