New sign marks renamed Harbourfront hub

artportYork Quay Centre, the main building at Toronto’s arts- and community-focused Harbourfront Centre, has been renamed the Bill Boyle Artport in honour of the founding CEO, William J.S. Boyle. A new sign was unveiled on May 4.

Originally a trucking garage, the building has become the main hub of Harbourfront’s 4-ha (10-acre) site along Toronto’s central waterfront. Boyle became CEO in 1991 when the centre was launched as a not-for-profit organization. He had previously directed the site’s Power Plant contemporary art gallery and community programs.

In August 2013, Boyle announced his plans to retire. He will be succeeded by Marah Braye, currently CEO of the Bienniale of Sydney, Australia, a major contemporary art festival.

“We wanted to do something special to honour Bill’s exceptional legacy,” says Tenio Evangelista, president of Harbourfront’s board of directors. “The Bill Boyle Artport will continue to nurture creative expression.”
