The Town of Botwood, N.L., recently unveiled a new mural, “Kraken World,” which adorns the garage doors of the Exploits Valley Corporation Building.

According to a report from VOCM.com[1], the painting by Craig Goudie features “creatures from the deep,” including the famous Kraken, or giant squid. A massive 16.8-m (55-ft) giant squid was caught in neighbouring Glover’s Harbour back in 1878. The creature made it into the Guinness Book of World Records and has yet to be rivalled in size.

Botwood also unveiled a mural to the War Brides of the area—young women from Scotland and England who married Newfoundlanders during the First and Second World Wars and followed their spouses across the ocean.

The president of the Botwood Mural Arts Society, Trudy Stuckless, said this latest project fell into their laps.

Back in December 2021, they received a call from the World Oceans Day NL committee, interested in a mural. She said they had two other murals planned for the summer, but this one was an unexpected surprise.
