Omnify Lighting, a mid-sized business in custom light-emitting diode (LED) backlighting headquartered in Toronto has added “OnGuard” face shields to its production.
According to a media release, in response to Premier Doug Ford’s call for Ontario’s manufacturing companies to step up, Omnify made the decision to design and build face shields for front line workers.
“When we saw what was on the market, we realized we had the right high quality materials in our inventory, and the correct production equipment, not to mention the skilled labour, to make this a reality quickly,” said Omnify CEO Will Andrew. “These past few weeks have been challenging for our staff and now they are excited to be called on to help front line workers. I am grateful for our team’s efforts and their willingness to be flexible and adaptable to the current environment, which seems to change daily.”
The company has added two manufacturing shifts and is working with local businesses to enhance production capacity. In a collaborative effort both customers and suppliers have stepped up to support the efforts, helping with the design and production. Omnify also teamed up with a number of doctors to test the product and provide design iterations to make the end product even better.
The company is reaching out to partners in both Canada and the U.S. to help distribute the product and will ramp up production accordingly.
“We have been speaking to numerous hospitals, First Nation healthcare professionals, NGOs and large international nonprofits to help supply the required PPE to other countries,” Andrew said. “As Doug Ford suggested, our desire is to help at home in Ontario, across Canada, and ideally well beyond.”
