On-printer spectrophotometer earns patent

Large-format piezoelectric printer manufacturer Mutoh America has been awarded a patent for its SpectroVue VM-10 on-printer spectrophotometer, which was developed specifically to aid sign shops with colour calibration and linearization. The compact device attaches directly to the printheads of Mutoh’s ValueJet 1324, 1624, 1638 and 2638 printers to automate the task of printing and measuring colour targets when creating new custom International Color Consortium (ICC) profiles. It also comes standard with the ValuJet 1608HS. The SpectroVue VM-10 is uniquely designed with a DP1 spectral imaging chip that converts visible light into a digital spectrum. It is compatible with raster image processors (RIPs) to streamline workflows while optimizing colour consistency. “The device provides a way for sign shops to identify colour reproduction problems before printing,” says Gary Rudnick, the company’s director of sales. The patent was issued in October.
