In a bid to bolster the local economy and enhance tourism experience, the Council of Georgina greenlit a tourism and wayfinding strategy in April. This plan, the 2024 Georgina Tourism and Wayfinding Strategy, aims to revitalize the town’s tourism sector, located on the shores of Lake Simcoe, Ont., by ensuring key tourism attractions and cultural and economic hubs are easily found by visitors and residents.
The strategy promises manifold benefits for Georgina’s community. It seeks to channel traffic towards historic business zones, thereby amplifying local spending and economic vitality. By orchestrating visitor pathways, it aims to maximize the economic impact of transient traffic, ensuring a boost in visitation to both public and private tourism hotspots. The wayfinding strategy, however, does not include regulatory road signs, facility, or park signs.
The initiative also endeavours to elevate the town’s profile as a premier destination, through visually appealing wayfinding signage. Georgina is a four-season tourism destination due to its proximity to Lake Simcoe. Tourism’s year-round impact on Georgina’s local economy is gauged from the fact that the sector employs roughly one out of every 10 jobs. This esthetic upgrade also aims to foster a stronger sense of community, bolster pedestrian safety, and fortify the town’s appeal.
