Developed in partnership with Gauge Mobile, the technology allows data to be sent instantly and securely to pedestrians’ phones when they touch a chip embedded in a Toronto bus shelter or a Montreal advertising column. Potential applications include viewing a trailer for a new movie, receiving a discount coupon for a store or restaurant or navigating a car dealership’s ‘virtual showroom.’

“Consumers are very active and demanding and our NFC-enabled street furniture will allow them to get relevant information quickly about products they like,” says Debbie Drutz, Astral’s director of media innovation. “The advertising community, for its part, will have technology at its disposal to prolong interaction with these consumers.”

The technology is currently compatible with several smart phone brands and models, including Samsung, HTC, BlackBerry and Nokia, with others to follow.
