Toronto-based Ryerson University’s School of Graphic Communications Management (GCM) has installed new hardware and software donated by Esko to assist students’ coursework, research and extracurricular activities.
Unveiled at a special ribbon-cutting ceremony on November 8, 2012, Esko’s major technology gift—including a Cyrel Digital Imager (CDI) flexographic plate imaging system and packaging workflow software—is intended to facilitate Ryerson’s efforts to prepare students for careers as managers in the printing and packaging industries.
“Esko is very active in the Toronto market and it’s seldom that a customer or client isn’t connected to Ryerson in some way,” explains Larry Moore, Esko’s director of software services for North America. “Considering Ryerson’s School of GCM is a leader in educating those in the industry, donating this gift was a natural choice for us.”
The donated products cover workflow from design and visualization through proofing and production.
“Students will benefit tremendously,” says Ian Baitz, the school’s chair. “They will learn design and prepress systems. We have focused on digital and offset printing for many years and added a flexographic press three years ago, but our missing pieces were a packaging workflow and method to create plates. Our students are very open to packaging, which involves marketing, branding and consumer decision-making.”
