img_6387[1]The Ontario Heritage Trust has unveiled a provincial plaque at the Cornwall Armoury commemorating Colonel Darby Bergin, a celebrated physician, politician and military officer who lived from 1826 to 1896.

Presented in collaboration with the Stormond, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders’ Regimental Foundation, the plaque is a permanent installation at the Precious Blood Parish Cemetery in Cornwall, Ont. It recognizes Bergin’s advocacy for rural affairs, public health and social justice, support for the military, position as Canada’s first Surgeon General and founding of the Ontario Pacific Railway.

“He promoted health in many forms, including advocating for the well-being of workers,” says Thomas H.B. Symon, chair of the Ontario Heritage Trust. “More than a century later, we continue to benefit from his work, so we are delighted to honour him with a provincial plaque.”
