Powdercoated Signage Brings History to Life

When Cornwall, Ont., decided to incorporate a city-wide visual walking tour, complete with informative and descriptive signage along its waterfront trail, project planners needed to ensure the material selected for the panels would allow for a permanent graffiti-resistant installation that would not chip, fade, or rust with time. Beyond longevity, the plaques also needed to provide crisp, clean imagery, as the signage would showcase the work of hometown visual artist Pierre Giroux.
The city recruited Quebec-based ALTO™ Aluminum to create the plaques. The digital graphics were infused directly into the aluminum panels and finished with a powdercoating that not only allowed the images to maintain all of the details of Giroux’s original paintings, but also protected the artwork from fire, corrosion, and ultraviolet (UV) damage. Further, the eco-friendly process was completed without the use of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
The plaques were installed in 2016. The 28-piece series brings history to life, via colourful illustrations of historic scenes from the city’s past.
