After six years, one of the bright, glimmering signs synonymous with former bargain retailer Honest Ed’s is coming home to its original location in Toronto.
According to a post on blogTO[2], a vertical marquee sign which previously hung above the southwest edge of “Honest Ed’s Alley” will be incorporated into the new mixed-use Mirvish Village complex at the corner of Bathurst and Bloor streets.
Following news of an application to erect and display a refurbished sign from the old store back in April, a representative from the City of Toronto recently shared images and drawings of the signage within the new development. It will be placed in roughly the same position—overlooking the reinstated alley—and will feature a restored light bulb marquee and neon tubes, to add ambiance to the open-air space once the sun goes down.
The post also explains the smaller marquee sign appears to predate the store’s iconic circus-themed signage by a few decades, which would arguably make it “a more important historical marker for the site than the ultra-kitsch that came later.”
