Surrey City Council, joined by members of the Cloverdale Rodeo and Exhibition Association (CREA), celebrated the dedication of 177B St. as “Will Senger Way” in Cloverdale in Surrey, B.C., on May 14. Senger’s family was also present.
Will Senger dedicated more than five decades to the CREA, beginning as a volunteer in the 1950s. Throughout his tenure, he served in various roles within the CREA, including director of the association and chairman of the Cloverdale Rodeo. In recognition of his impact on the rodeo community in the country, he received the Governor General’s Medal in 1992. In 2004, he became the first British Columbian to be inducted into the Canadian Professional Rodeo Hall of Fame. Senger passed away in October 2017.
To immortalize his legacy, the City of Surrey has installed and unveiled commemorative street signs for “Will Senger Way” at strategic intersections, including the corner of 62 Ave. and 177B St., on 62A Ave. and 177B St., and on 64 Ave. and 177B St.
Surrey mayor Brenda Locke remarked that Will Senger Way stands as a tribute to Senger’s enduring connection with the community and Cloverdale Rodeo, saying, “Heritage is more than just preserving buildings; it’s about honouring the stories and individuals who shape our city. The Cloverdale Rodeo holds a significant place in Surrey’s history and remains a beloved tradition, and this weekend marks another chapter in its long history, thanks in part to the dedication of volunteers like Mr. Senger.”
