Roots wins retail design award for new Yorkdale store

Canadian clothing retailer Roots’ new ‘enhanced experience’ store at Toronto’s Yorkdale Shopping Centre has won gold at the 2018 Shop! Awards, an accolade regarded as one of the highest achievements in retail design and brand marketing.

Roots won in the category for softline specialty stores between 279 and 697 m² (3,001 and 7,500 sf). Its new ‘cabin’ store at Yorkdale, designed by CallisonRTKL, incorporates locally sourced millwork and reclaimed Ontario cedar, with exterior identification (ID) signage and window graphics complemented by interior signs, including an original ‘R’ sign from an early flagship store.

“It has become increasingly important to provide a unique shopping experience,” says Alex Jones, Roots’ vice-president (VP) of real estate. “This award affirms our dedication toward innovative design.”
