Three internationally renowned artists—Christian Moeller, Ben Davis and Nik Hafermaas—will be featured speakers at the Society for Environmental Graphic Design (SEGD) Conference this June in San Francisco, Calif., sharing perspectives on how public art shapes urban landscapes.

“Public art is an important aspect of environmental graphic design (EGD),” says Lonny Israel, co-chair of the conference, which take place from June 6 to 8. “These artists have combined materials and technology in unique ways, provoked us to think about issues and exemplified how art can transform urban spaces.”

Moeller’s Cloud (pictured), for example, is an 8.5 x 6.7-m (28 x 22-ft) bookshelf at Dixie College in St. George, Utah. It depicts a single, large-format image of a cloud, but comprises 12,000 sketchbooks in custom-dyed linen covers, which students and faculty are encouraged to remove, fill with drawings and thoughts and then return to the shelf.

Davis recently helped create an $8-million light sculpture on San Franciso’s Bay Bridge, while Hafermass has synchronized a 27.4-m (90-ft) long sculpture at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to shimmer in response to real-time traffic data.
