The Specialty Graphic Imaging Association (SGIA) honoured the ‘Best in Show’ winners of its Golden Image Competition and Tom Frecska Student Printing Competition last month at its 2014 expo, recognizing their exceptional expertise in the field.
“Receiving one of these awards places the winner at the top of the world’s leading printers,” says Johnny Shell, SGIA’s vice-president (VP) of technical services. “Achieving such high quality indicates remarkable control and ability.”
The Golden Image Competition recognizes almost every type of item in the specialty graphics industry—including stickers, instrumentation, piece goods, posters, banners, containers, greeting cards, interior décor, vehicle wraps and building graphics, among many others—with gold, silver, bronze and honourable mention ribbons.
Then, from among the gold winners, members of the Academy of Screen and Digital Printing Technologies (ASDPT) choose the ‘best of the best’ for the top awards. There is also one ‘people’s choice’ winner.
The following were this year’s choices:
• Graphic – 2014 Jazz Fest Poster for Preservation Hall Jazz Band by DMR Graphics.
• Digital – Shell Storage Tanks by Mountain Commercial Graphics
• Digital Creativity – The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Plane by Admark Visual Imaging (pictured above).
• Garment – Patches by Midi Print.
• People’s Choice: Shell Storage Tanks by Mountain Commercial Graphics.
Entrants in the Tom Frecska Student Printing Competition, meanwhile, represent secondary and post-secondary schools. At the 2014 SGIA Expo, there were two Best in Show winners among work completed in the 2013-2014 school year:
• Secondary school – Tilt by Eddie Beccera, Paramount High School.
• Post-secondary school – Mola ‘Vision Tejida de la Realidad Kuna’ by Endir Nazry Roa Basto, Center for the Graphic Communication Industry (Cenigraf) SENA (pictured right).
