DSC_0041[1]In January, the Specialty Graphic Imaging Association (SGIA) hosted a group of first-year graphic communications students on an annual field trip to learn about the history of screenprinting and how it continues to be used today.

The event on January 13 marked a return for Monroe Technology Center in Leesburg, Va., to SGIA’s headquarters (HQ) in nearby Fairfax, Va. The day began with SGIA vice-president (VP) of technical services Johnny Shell providing a detailed presentation about screenprinting’s history, different kinds of mesh and how to expose and coat screens.

Next, the students got to try their hand at screenprinting T-shirts with a variety of designs. The day wrapped up with an in-depth look at wide-format printing, presented by SGIA digital imaging specialist Ray Weiss.

“In class, we present theory,” says Pam Smith, Monroe graphic communications instructor, “but here, with hands-on demonstrations, it clicks.”
