On September 19-20, the Sign Association of Canada (SAC-ACE) hosted in Mississauga, Ont., its annual Sign Expo Canada, a two-day event packed with workshops, panels, keynote presentations, and a trade show showcasing the latest innovations in the industry, from cutting-edge products to new technologies.

The event kicked off with a compelling Strategic Planning Executive Panel, expertly moderated by Susan Svotelis, chair of the SAC-ACE task force. Industry leaders Jorg Cieslok (independent director, VENDO Media), Keith Edwards (CEO, Media Resources International), Steve Gallow (managing director and partner, Media Resources International), and Kevin Martens (director of operations-Quebec, Astral Media Outdoor) explored the dynamic evolution of out-of-home (OOH) media in Canada. They provided valuable insights into the transformation of signage from traditional paper formats to digital displays, emphasizing the growing significance of street furniture and the impact of digital technologies on the industry. They also emphasized that investing in OOH is how cities like Toronto can become smart cities, highlighting its role in the future of advertising.

Next year’s event promises to be special, as it will mark the 70th anniversary of SAC-ACE.

Attendees were also treated to practical workshops in the Wrap Lab, where they engaged in hands-on sessions covering vinyl handling, wall treatments, bumper wrapping, and more. The Tool Tech Zone emerged as a major attraction on the trade show floor, drawing a steady stream of participants looking to enhance their technical skills throughout the day. Live demonstrations on cutting, trimming, and deburring with specialized sign-making tools offered learning experiences, while sessions focused on time-saving shop tools provided practical tips for improving efficiency in vinyl installation and removal, window graphics techniques, and effective vinyl management.

Keynote speakers on both days inspired attendees with their success stories. Jake Karls, co-founder of chocolate brand, Mid-Day Squares, and Tonia Jahshan, founder of tea company, Sipology, shared intriguing insights on the art of storytelling and mastering the pitch in brand development. These sessions saw several sign-makers ask questions and engage in discussions on how to improve their businesses.

The event also featured two highly anticipated boot camps. The Illuminated Product Bootcamp delved into fabrication techniques for illuminated signage, while the Frontline Sales Bootcamp equipped participants with essential strategies for client communication, time management, pricing, and strategic planning.
