The transformation of Toronto’s Maple Leaf Gardens into a Loblaws grocery store with a broad array of distinctive signage has won an interior design award from World Architecture News (WAN).
The WAN awards recognize the best in international design, accepting nominations in a variety of categories. The Loblaws project, a collaboration between Toronto’s Turner Fleischer Architects and Australia’s Landini Associates, won first place in the category for retail spaces larger than 200 m2 (2,152 sf).
Landini designed many signs, graphics and other iconic visual elements for the 7,567-m2 (81,450-sf) grocery store (see Sign Media Canada, May 2012, page 22), such as a leaf-shaped sculpture made up of old arena chairs (pictured, above) and signs for various departments (example pictured below), including the bakery, deli and café.
