Solar power takes Calgary Transit posters off the grid

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES[1]Outfront Media Canada, formerly CBS Outdoor, has introduced solar-powered transit shelters in Calgary, allowing 100 out-of-home (OOH) posters to be illuminated at night with battery-stored power, rather than requiring a connection to the electrical grid.

The project represents a collaboration with Daytech, which designs, fabricates and installs transit shelters and other street furniture. A proprietary design integrates solar panels and battery packs into existing structures.

“Solar technology has advanced to the level where we can enhance light levels for Calgary Transit’s shelters where underground electrical connections are not feasible,” explains Darcy Clark, Outfront’s national director of transit franchise and inventory management. “We can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by decreasing demand on the grid while simultaneously increasing exposure for our advertisers.”
