TD Centre’s windows become giant sign

In what is reportedly the world’s largest public art project of its kind, Aude Moreau used the lit and unlit windows of the top 10 floors of the Toronto-Dominion (TD) Centre’s five office towers as a sign, spelling out ‘Less is more or …’ in 30.5-m (100-ft) tall letters earlier this month.

Running for three nights over the Labour Day weekend, the project was presented by TD Bank Group and building operator Cadillac Fairview as part of the 50th anniversary of Toronto’s original skyscrapers. Moreau, a Montreal-based artist, selected her words to echo those of Mies van der Rohe, the modernist architect who designed the towers.

Five electrical contractors donated their services to temporarily reconfigure the buildings’ automated lighting systems, while a crew of staff and volunteers opened and closed the blinds on more than 6,000 windows.

“We were thrilled to partake in a public art installation of this magnitude,” says Andrea Barrack, TD’s vice-president (VP) of community relations and corporate citizenship.
