Advanced Presentation Products, based in Mississauga, Ont., has installed a giant, curved video wall for General Electric’s (GE’s) new Grid IQ Research and Collaboration Centre in Markham, Ont.
At the facility, GE’s energy division will collect and analyze ‘smart meter’ data from across the province to help improve the conservation of electricity and shift more of its use to off-peak hours. The video wall was conceptualized as a way to visually express this work.
Comprising 175 laser phosphor display (LPD) tiles from Prysm in five sections, the wall stands 2.1 m (7 ft) tall and stretches 17.7 m (58 ft) wide. Its content, which teaches guests and visitors about various methods of energy conservation, is driven by multiple personal computers (PCs). Video signals pass through a scalable processing system, creating a cascade of images while ensuring uniformity and consistency across the LPDs.
With a custom-designed control system, users can interact with the video wall through tablet PCs and touch panels. A digital audio presentation mixer, amplifiers and speakers provide a ‘zoned’ sound system.
The LPDs were chosen after GE and Advanced staff toured Prysm’s product demonstration centres and compared them to other options. Since then, GE has adopted the technology as its new display standard.
