West Edmonton Mall deploys interactive kiosks

_MG_2864The West Edmonton Mall (WEM) has installed 12 new visitor information kiosks powered by Dell technology, featuring video game-style interaction to simplify navigation of North America’s largest shopping centre.

Customers can view directions and store-specific information on the kiosks’ 1.7-m (65-in.) ultra-high-definition (UHD) ‘4K’ screens and download coupons to their smartphones via near field communication (NFC) or Quick Response (QR) codes. Each kiosk is supported by a Dell Precision T1700 workstation with an Intel Xeon processor and two Nvidia Quadro central processing units (CPUs).

WEM’s own information technology (IT) department designed the kiosks’ customized wayfinding interface using software associated with video game development—including Adobe Air, Feathers and Sonic Frameworks—to provide a vividly animated navigational experience. The team is also using Dell’s ProSupport Plus software to automatically prevent and resolve any issues that could arise.
