After several years of utility model and patent disputes between wide-format printer manufacturers Durst Phototechnik and Electronics for Imaging (EFI), a court in Germany has ruled in the first instance in favour of Durst.
The dispute in question involves a German patent for overlapping printhead arrays for white and coloured inks. These systems prime a printable substrate with white dye before applying different coloured inks.
As a result of an action brought by Durst, the Dusseldorf District Court ordered EFI to refrain from supplying, marketing or using its Vutek QS and GS printer lines (example pictured) in Germany. The ruling was made on February 28, 2013, but is still not binding, as EFI is entitled to bring an appeal against it.
