To mark Canada’s 150th birthday, charitable education organization Vibe Arts and Toronto’s Scarborough Town Centre (STC) shopping mall have unveiled 60 murals hand-painted by 500 young people in every province and territory.
Ranging in age from nine to 29, the artists come from 30 community organizations across the country, including youth agencies, homeless shelters and under-resourced schools. Their murals, created for the ‘150+ Reasons We Love Canada’ project, appear as large-scale reproductions in an exhibit that will run at STC until July 3. The original 1.2 x 1.8-m (4 x 6-ft) murals will be installed in Toronto subway stations throughout July and August. Their images will also appear on Pattison Outdoor billboards and on airport digital displays across the country.
“These murals represent the creative ability and leadership of young Canadians brought together to transform public space and inspire the nation through their collective art-making,” says Julie Frost, executive and artistic director for Vibe Arts. “They have created an impressive public art legacy.”
