Youths paint murals to welcome Pan Am athletes

studentmuralYoung people across Ontario are painting welcome messages on old subway ad panels for the upcoming 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, under a partnership with Arts for Children and Youth (AFCY), Pattison Outdoor Advertising and the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC).

AFCY, a charitable organization, has organized art workshops through schools, neighbourhood improvement areas (NIAs) and homeless shelters. In total, 500 youths will paint 60 murals, including 41 to represent the Pan American nations participating in the games and 19 ‘spirited’ posters to convey ideas like co-operation and sportsmanship.

The murals will be displayed during the games in the summer, but the TO2015 Organizing Committee has also arranged to digitize and print them as plaques that will be handed out to arriving athletes in their welcome packages.
