The aging neon signs outside Yukon’s only movie theatre will soon receive the star treatment, courtesy of the Yukon Film Society and Concept Neon of Vancouver.
According to a report from Yukon News, the signs on the exterior of the building will have their letters repainted and illuminated in “brilliant neon red.” Currently, only two letters in “Theatre” still light up, while all the letters in “Yukon” light up in different hues.
The Yukon Film Society’s general manager, Patrick Jacobson, said most of the letters are in working condition, but cannot be turned on, as their transformers are worn out. He is unsure how long it has been since they all shone in unison.
Concept Neon visited the theatre to trace out the letters that needed new glass, which they will be building at their shop before they return to complete the restoration. Repairs on the signs are expected to be completed in late August or early September.
The theatre will celebrate its 70th anniversary on Dec. 3, 2024. The Yukon Film Society plans to extend the celebration throughout the entire year.
